It takes a certain level of U2 fan to know the song Lady With The Spinning Head, but if you’ve heard Achtung Baby! a few times then you would recognise it.
In the early recording sessions for that album in Berlin, the band were struggling with the song Lady With The Spinning Head. There was something there, something they sensed was worth building on and developing, but it needed to be pulled apart. It became three different songs – Zoo Station, The Fly, and Ultraviolet.
Sometimes our creative ideas are strong but need to be viewed in a different way. They need to be pulled apart. Put together in a different order. Placed next to other ideas as a way to see what can develop.
That’s what is so hard about the process. Why creativity is so hard to pin down. It’s also what is so important about the process.
It takes persistence with an idea but it also takes play and imagination. A human element.
Collaboration is powerful because of these very reasons. Playing with ideas and perspective can be confronting, but going through that process can be exhilarating. It brings chills and goosebumps. It brings surprising results.
The process is the point.
